      A method of molding in which the molding material, generally preheated, is first placed in an open, heated mold cavity. The mold is closed with a top force or plug member, pressure is applied to force the material into contact with all mold areas, and heat and pressure are maintained until the molding material has cured. The process employs thermosetting resins in a partially cured stage, either in the form of granules, putty-like masses, or preforms. Compression molding is a high-volume, high-pressure method suitable for molding complex, high-strength fiberglass reinforcements. Advanced composite thermoplastics can also be compression molded with unidirectional tapes, woven fabrics, randomly orientated fiber mat or chopped strand.       Acetal is a thermoplastic resin commonly used for injection molding applications. Acetal resins, or technically called polyoxymethylenes (POM), are among the strongest and stiffest of thermoplastics. Acetal copolymers are well known for their fatigue and wear resistance as well as high chemical resistance and dimensional stability.

      Acetal resins provide an outstanding consistency of properties and color. They have exceptional solvent resistance, and are virtually unaffected by strong bases. Acetals are rigid, creep resistant and strong. They possess low coefficients of friction, and remain stable at high temperatures, even for extended use.

  • Celazole® PBI (U-60)
      Celazole PBI (grade U-60 - Compression-Molded 100% PBI) is the highest performance engineering thermoplastic available today. It offers the highest heat resistance and mechanical property retention over 400°F of any unfilled plastic. Celazole PBI has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic.

      Celazole U-60 PBI is an unfilled PBI polymer suitable for compression molding. U-60 is commonly molded and machined into precision parts for industrial, chemical and petrochemical industries; aerospace; glass making; liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacture; and photovoltaic (PV) panel manufacture.

      As an unreinforced material, Celazole PBI is very "clean" in terms of ionic impurity and it does not outgas (except water). These characteristics make this material very attractive to semiconductor manufacturers for vacuum chamber applications. Celazole PBI has excellent ultrasonic transparency which makes it an ideal choice for parts such as probe tip lenses in ultrasonic measuring equipment.

      Celazole PBI is also an excellent thermal insulator. Other plastics in melt do not stick to PBI. These characteristics make it ideal for contact seals and insulator bushings in plastic production and molding equipment.
    • Highest mechanical properties of any plastic above 400°F (204°C)
    • Highest heat deflection temperature 800°F (427°C), with a continuous service capability of 750°F (399°C) in inert environments, or 650°F (343°C) in air with short term exposure potential to 1,000°F (538°C)
    • Lowest coefficient of thermal expansion and highest compressive strength of all unfilled plastics

      Hot Runner Materials for injection molding. Hot runner insulators are typically made from polyimide or ceramic materials available from Professional Plastics. A hot runner is an injection mold component containing a series of channels that distributes molten plastic within a mold. Unlike an ordinary cold runners, the hot runners are heated, so the plastic melt in the hot runners never freeze.

      Hot runners are reasonably complicated devices, so they are usually assembled from the premanufactured units. The two main types of hot runners are the externally heated and internally heated. The latter have some slender heaters inside the runners; the outside boundaries of the runners usually have the temperature below the melt-freeze, so there is a layer of a frozen plastic that insulates the internal heater and the molten plastic from the cold outside boundaries.

      Hot runners usually make the mold more expensive to manufacture and run, but allow savings by reducing the plastic waste and sometimes by reducing the cycle time (do not have to wait until the runners would freeze). Despite the higher initial cost, the long-term benefits of equipping a mold with a hot runner system can be easily justified. A hot runner-equipped mold can effectively reduce molding costs without significantly increasing the complexity of the mold design. Generally, mold build leadtimes are not impacted as the hot runner is designed and manufactured in parallel with the mold.
