A radio frequency power amplifier (RF power amplifier) is a type of electronic amplifier that converts a low-power radio-frequency signal into a higher power signal. Typically, RF power amplifers drive the antenna of a transmitter. Design goals often include gain, power output, bandwidth, power efficiency, linearity (low signal compression at rated output), input and output impedance matching, and heat dissipation. The radio spectrum of the electromagnetic scale runs from ULF (Ultra Low Frequency) up the EHF (Extremely High Frequency). The higher end of this range is known as the Microwave Range which runs 100 MHz up to 100 GHz. The start of the microwave range begins with ISM bands from 315 to to 915 MHz, and continues to ISM bands up to the 2.4 GHz ISM band. Next is the UWB range which runs from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. Frequencies above this range are considered EHF which pushes beyond the microwave range and into 4G cellular bands from 56 GHz to 100 GHz.

  • UHF = Ultra Frequency
  • SHF = Super High Frequency
  • EHF = Extremely High Frequency
