Overview of Mining & Quarries (1000-MN)

— The Mining Industry involves the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth from an orebody, lode, vein, seam, reef or placer deposits which forms the mineralized package. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal, oil shale, gemstones, limestone, dimension stone, rock salt, potash, gravel, and clay. Mining techniques can be divided into two common excavation types: surface mining and sub-surface (underground) mining.

Quarries - A quarry is a type of open-pit mine in which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate is excavated from the ground. This industry also involves the cutting and extraction on high-value stone deposits such as Marble, Granite, Quartz, Limestone, Sandstone, Slate & Silica. Many of these quarry stones are cut into larger slabs and removed from the quarry and later polished and finished with varying degrees of sheen or luster.

Plastics are commonly used for impact and wear-resistant surfaces within heavy equipment and material handling systems used to explore and remove both valuable materials and excess waste. Bulldozers, drills, explosives and trucks are all necessary for excavating the land. Lifts carry miners into and out of mines, and move rock and ore out, and machinery in and out, of underground mines. Huge trucks, shovels and cranes are employed in surface mining to move large quantities of overburden and ore. Processing plants utilize large crushers, mills, reactors, roasters and other equipment to consolidate the mineral-rich material and extract the desired compounds and metals from the ore.
